Launch Event: Self-Care Readiness Index

Join us for the launch of the first-ever Self-Care Readiness Index, alongside the 76th session of the UN General Assembly. Register here

The index is an innovative research and policy tool that explores critical enablers for self-care readiness across health systems around the world. Spearheaded by The Global Self-Care Federation (GSCF), the Index is supported by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and forms part of the current working plan between the two bodies.

Speakers will discuss critical enablers of self-care and its potential to boost health system sustainability. The discussion will conclude with an audience Q&A.

The pandemic, on top of climate related events, has pushed us to the brink of a food & nutrition crisis which will ultimately spiral us into deeper poverty and inequality: nearly 2 billion people have no regular access to safe, nutritious food. It is time to ACT NOW and who better to talk about this issue defining the fate of mankind and about why there’s plenty of opportunity to solve it together than  

David Beasley, Executive Director of the World Food Programme and the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

Together with Geraldine Matchett Co-CEO of DSM, a World Food Programme (WFP) private sector partner for almost 15 years they will discuss:

In order to meet 2030 sustainability goals, we need a radical change in how we think and act about food. Society and culture impact the way we eat, and we seek to shift that for the future.

The Demand Generation Alliance (DGA) is a new initiative whose goal is to shift societal preferences around sustainable and nutritious food.

Historically, food system transformation has concentrated on supply-side measures (such as agricultural subsidies, sustainable sourcing, and product reformulation) that can be enacted. Consumer demand has been considered less critical for transforming food systems.

To achieve long lasting changes in food system we must address society-wide food preferences by using social and cultural strategies. Achieving this level of societal change requires cross-sector collaboration, because no one actor nor one factor on its own can shift demand. Changing societal food preferences along with cross-sector collaboration will push towards enabling better choices for everyone.

Citizens with strong food preferences advocate for stronger policy on healthy and sustainable foods, which further enables preference and choice. Strong consumer preferences, in turn, incentivize investments in the nutritious and sustainable foods category.

Join us for the Global Launch Event of the Demand Generation Alliance to learn more about the DGA’s mission, and hear from experts in academia, NGOs, and business on how together we can drive change in consumer demand.

The biggest threat from Climate Change is not a gradual rise in sea levels. What will come first is the rapid collapse of global food systems, and the poverty and political unrest this will cause. The irony is that food production itself is a major cause of Climate Change.

On 21 May, the SDG tent will host key climate leaders across the food value chain who will discuss inspiring investment opportunities and practical business cases which best respond to the triple threat of food security, economic and climate crises and build climate resilient food systems in emerging markets across Africa, Asia Pacific and Latin America.

Access to Medicines in Emerging Markets: How Executives and Investors can Help

Improving access to medicines and health products in low- and middle-income countries allows pharmaceutical and life science companies to unlock growth by serving underserved populations and contributes to the creation of healthier and more productive societies. It also contributes to preventing disease outbreaks that can have significant health and economic consequences globally. The Access to Medicine Index ranks 20 of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies on how they contribute to access to medicine in key areas such as R&D, pricing, manufacturing & distribution, and compliance. The ATM Index shows that in the last 10 years large pharma and life sciences companies have made significant progress on many aspects of improving access. The continuation and scale up of such initiatives requires strong commitment from executive management and large investors. This panel discussion will bring together senior executives to discuss the progress made on this front so far, and ways to further bolster efforts to improve access to medicines in low- and middle-income countries.

The UNFSS in September 2021, aims to unleash ambitious new actions and innovative solutions from key players across all stakeholder backgrounds, to transform our food systems and leverage shifts to deliver progress across all the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the lead up to this historic event, the WBA has been working with the UN Food System Summit Secretariat to ensure we collaboratively guide companies on sustainable business practices across the whole food system transformation agenda.

  • The on-going Summit process;
  • The key proposed solution areas for the private sector, as identified by the Private Sector Guiding Group (PSGG), and how companies can get input and make suggestions; These solution areas were generated from the first wave of consolidated game-changing propositions from all five Action Tracks.

Biodiversity means life on Earth. It is our life support system. As our social and economic systems are dependent on nature, we simply can’t have resilient productive systems without biodiversity. Creating the conditions for sustainable growth challenges us to rethink how to unlock all the potential of wildlife and natural resources without damaging our planetary health. 

This session aims to address these issues by discussing ways in which we can connect Business with Biodiversity. It will explore how Nature-Based Solutions, Impact Measurement and Artificial Intelligence can offer solutions that can not only increase financial capital but also environmental, social and human capital for businesses and society at large. To emphasize on concrete solutions, three technology-based startups with both measurable and positive impact on biodiversity will pitch their solutions during this event and receive insightful feedback. At the end of the session, one startup will be selected and invited to participate in a panel discussion during the CHANGENOW 2021 edition that will take place in Paris between the 27-29th May 2021 (most probably virtually).
